FLORIDA HOSPITAL DIABETES INSTITUTE

ORLANDO, FL

The Diabetes Institute is located in a seven-story medical office building located on Florida Hospital’s Orlando Campus. Occupying a complete floor, the Institute’s focus is on the prevention and treatment of Diabetes through proper lifestyle and nutrition. Designed around this mission, the 19,200 SF facility offers Outpatient Services to accommodate six endocrinology physicians. Eighteen physician exam rooms and ten registered and nurse practitioner exam rooms support the outpatient department. Board certified physicians, nurse case managers, and others provide outpatient medical evaluation and treatment of diabetes for a wide range of complications. Space in the Institute accommodates the services of specialty physicians and on-going scientific research.

The Education Department includes a large classroom with seating for 50 to 75 people, a smaller 30 to 40 person classroom and a large demonstration kitchen. The demonstration kitchen and a mock supermarket are located adjacent to the large classroom. Three individual training classrooms provide one-on-one education and/or counseling. The space also has 15 staff offices and workstations. A research unit has a small lab and research monitoring room for observing and evaluating patients as well as staff offices and workstations accommodating six clinical researchers.

An administrative suite supports the Diabetes Institute staff. A large assembly conference room/break room provides a multipurpose venue for department-wide staff meetings and conferences and serves as a gathering place for staff socializing and other activities.

The Institute includes three new programmatic elements to enhance the delivery of services to patients, doctors and the 2,188-bed Florida Hospital healthcare system. A new Clinical Research Institute (CRI) supports collaborative research with other local and national centers of research focused on a cure for diabetes. An expanded physical therapy unit will be part of a large Fitness Club planned to serve the Florida Hospital system. A future Children’s Diabetes Center is also planned that will be supported by these facilities and will collaborate with Florida Hospital’s Children’s Hospital.
