HEART OF FLORIDA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Patient Tower Addition

Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.

Understanding that healthcare delivery would change dramatically after the original facility was opened in 1997, the HHCP Team worked closely with the owner and hospital user-groups to develop a comprehensive master plan and new hospital that would support future expansion and renovation programs. An additional 30-acres was purchased and planned to tie into the original 37-acre campus. With ample land to support a “Replace-in-Place” approach, Heart of Florida has nearly tripled in size with eight additions and renovations that support new programs, services, and advanced technologies which have maximized patient care and operational performance. Today, the medical center is a state-of-the-art, full service 60-acre campus with medical office buildings.

Designed as a prototype replacement facility, a core “chassis” was developed that allowed departments to efficiently expand both vertically and horizontally while facilitating the appropriate realignment of clinical and administrative spaces. HHCP’s design approach resulted in a seamless integration of the existing and new additions. Minimal disruption to existing operations has consistently been achieved throughout the entire facility revitalization and improvement program. As the regional medical center continues to evolve, ease of maintenance and long term sustainability have been achieved and advanced with each successive expansion. A 4th and 5th floor patient bed expansion was completed in 2008. Today, it provides private patient rooms which are sized to accommodate patient focused care where family members may stay overnight in the room.

In the last decade, Heart of Florida has followed its master plan, growing from a 51 to a 142-bed licensed facility. State-of-the-art clinical diagnostic and treatment services, a new emergency department and a major outpatient services department support the hospital. Collocation of clinical diagnostic and treatment services improves patient flow and turn-around time for emergency care and ambulatory patients. Wayfinding is enhanced by an dramatic entry/drop-off drive, similar in design to an airport terminal’s curbside check-in area, providing easily identifiable entrances. Immediately inside the Main Entry is registration/information, which serves inpatients, outpatients, and the adjacent emergency department, reducing the total number of FTE’s required for this function. Heart of Florida’s master plan will guide the facilities growth well into the future.
